Counillor Leon LandryBiography

Councillor Kathy Wells has lived in Amherst almost her entire life, moving here at the age of four with her parents, Lou and Wayne MacLean. She attended the YMCA Kindergarten, RB Dickey Elementary School, St. Charles Junior High, then graduated from ARHS.

After graduation, Kathy took her Bachelor of Education Degree in Elementary Education, with a minor in French, at the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro, where she graduated in 1993.

Following graduation, she returned to Amherst and got a term job teaching French at Jonathan McCully in Nappan and the Springhill Elementary Schools. Later that year, she taught Music and French in Pugwash and Wallace. The following year, she started her first of 13 years at the Springhill Elementary Schools.

During her time in Springhill, Kathy taught French, a Grade 4/6 combined class, and Primary. In 2001-2002, Kathy attended Mount Saint Vincent University, where she received her Master of Education in Literacy. She returned to the Springhill Elementary Schools as Vice Principal and Reading Recovery teacher.

Kathy became Principal of Cumberland North Academy in 2006, where she will remain until her retirement in 2025.

Kathy has been the recipient of an Excellence in Teaching Award in 2005, an Education Week award in 2015, and received her Diploma in Instructional Leadership in 2013.

Kathy married her husband Steve on July 1st, 2011 - and they ran the YMCA Cross Border Challenge the following day (in her wedding dress!!). She is the very proud mom and loudest cheer leader of Callum MacLean Wells as he plays baseball and basketball.

Kathy has always been involved in her community. She was a volunteer at the Cumberland YMCA, teaching fitness classes and becoming a member, then President of the Board of Directors. She was an active member of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union (where she met her husband!). She was on the initial committee that brought 100 Women Who Care to Cumberland County and is proud to have raised not only awareness of many not-for-profit organizations, but thousands of dollars. Kathy has volunteered for the AMBA and has worked on several political campaigns.

She is now looking forward to serving her community as a member of the Town Council.
