You don’t have to drive far in Amherst to see construction and development projects. Whether it be construction cranes on Brown Street or road construction starting on the upper Church Street housing development, there is no denying that this season is shaping up to be one of the strongest in many years.
One of the priorities of Town Council has been to encourage development and improve the quantity and mix of housing units throughout Amherst. Everything from larger executive housing to small affordable housing units is on the table.
This Spring, construction started on Brown/Mosher Street with the first of three 54-unit apartment buildings. The replacement of Gables Lodge, a 96-bed long term care facility, is also underway on Church Street. And, further up Church Street on what was known as the former Dolan land, Phase 1 of a large development is underway that will see the construction of 30-40 dwelling units on a 20-acre portion of the site. This development features a mix of single detached and multi-unit dwellings, with phase 1 anticipated to be completed by Spring 2025. Additional phases will be many hundreds more housing units on this land.
Construction is well underway on the first of three 54-unit apartment buildings in the area of Brown/Mosher Streets.
The Town has also started development on current vacant lands off Marshview Drive. The purchase, development and sale of lots on Marshview Drive Extension will facilitate the development of approximately 30 single detached houses which is also needed within the Town. Surveying for the lots is underway and the sale of lots is expected very soon.
Others developments at varying phases of the planning process include a 186-unit development off South Albion Street containing a mix of apartments and townhouses, as well as an exciting mixed-use commercial and residential building complex containing up to 86 dwelling units on vacant lands fronting on East Victoria, Maple and Electric Streets.
In total, approvals for approximately 650 housing units are on the books and are in various stages of development. For more information of approved development projects please visit the Planning and Development Applications page of our website.
