Nominations have now closed for Amherst’s October 19 municipal election. Fifteen candidates are running for a position on town council, including all incumbents.
There are two candidates vying for the Mayor’s position. The incumbent David Kogon is being challenged by Rob Small.
There are six council seats to be filled in this election and all current members of council – George Baker, Charlie Chambers, Hal Davidson, Lisa Emery, Leon Landry, and Dale Fawthrop – are running to reclaim their positions. Other candidates for a council seat include Sharon Leblanc, Kathy Wells, Dwayne Ripley, Vaughn Martin, Norm Robitza, Nic Furlong, and Terry (Mouser) McManaman.
The Conseil Scolaire Acadien Provincial school board for the Truro district seat will be held by Jessica Hinton who was acclaimed.
Amherst is continuing its practice of holding entirely electronic voting with the October 19 election. Citizens can vote by telephone, by computer or smartphone. There will be no option to vote with a paper ballot. Electronic voting is secure very user-friendly, and a demonstration video is available here: https://www.intelivote.com/demos
Further instruction will be mailed to eligible voters in Amherst in late September, including a unique PIN that will be used to vote.
Advance voting will open at noon on Thursday, October 10 and will remain open through election day on October 19.
