Chad Smith is the owner of Signpost Commercial Consulting; a new business located downtown at 26 Laplanche Street. He’s from Amherst, and he’s had a few different careers in related industries over the years, in a few different places.

Mayor Small and members of council recently attended Chad's open house event and took a moment to present him and his staff with a new business certificate, officially welcoming Signpost Commercial Consulting to the community.

Mayor Small was joined by members of council to present Chad Smith and his staff with a new business certificate, welcoming Signpost Commercial Consulting to downtown Amherst.

“Out of all the careers I’ve had over the years, this is the one that really stuck with me,” said Chad. “I wish I had known about this 30 years ago!”

Now back in Amherst, Chad said that his background in engineering and digital printing gave him a great foundation to move into signage.

“About six years ago I moved out of digital printing and started with a sign shop in Moncton. As soon as I got into the sign world, I thought ‘This is the job I’m going to do.’”

After Chad’s previous role at the sign shop in Moncton, he considered retirement. But he recognized an opportunity here in Amherst and decided to go for it.

“I was going to retire, but I’m not going to retire. So, here we are!”

Design is something that’s always been important to Chad. And in this line of business, you’re often helping make people’s vision a reality.

“The thing that’s important to me – you get a mom-and-pop shop, and you’re making their dreams come true,” shared Chad. “They see that sign and all of a sudden there’s tears in their eyes, because of how important it is to them.”

No two days at the shop are the same, and that is due in part to the wide variety of services on offer. From various types of sign manufacture and sign maintenance, repair, and retrofitting, there’s also the apparel and promotional item side of the business. Add to that a robust CNC machine and a paint booth with 32,000 colour options and the possibilities are practically endless.

It’s just a matter of discussing your needs with the team and working with them to bring your ideas to life.

When asked what advice he might give to someone considering opening a business in Amherst, Chad said “Don’t do it on your own. There are a lot of programs out there and organizations like the CBDC, so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. They’ve got so much advice, so much help to give.”
