Planning to use a propane or natural gas fire pit? Here’s what you need to know
Under Town of Amherst Bylaw C-7, propane fire pits are classified as “Recreational Outdoor Burning Appliances” — designed for small fires.
With the current provincewide burn ban in place due to extremely dry and high fire-risk conditions, all recreational outdoor burning, including propane and natural gas fire pits, is prohibited until the ban is lifted.
Once the ban is lifted, check the BurnSafe Map daily at 2:00 p.m. before burning.
- Red zones = No burning, including propane and natural gas appliances.
- Wood-burning fire pits have additional safety requirements (see Bylaw C-7, Section 4(e)).
- Barbecues used for cooking are not affected by these restrictions.
Let’s work together to keep Amherst safe.
