Smitty’s Fine Wine Ltd. is entering an exciting new chapter under the ownership of Greg Smith, blending tradition with fresh energy in one of Amherst’s favourite wine destinations. Formerly known as The Good Guys Brew Shoppe, the business continues to offer the same trusted service with a fresh vision for the future.
To celebrate the transition, Deputy Major Davidson and Councillor McManaman presented Greg with a New Business Certificate. They stopped by the shop to officially congratulate Greg and his team at Smitty’s Fine Wine.
What began as Greg’s daughter’s favourite job years ago has now turned into Greg’s newest venture. After shadowing the previous owners, he’s taken the reins alongside longtime staff Sarah and Janie, who bring plenty of experience and a warm welcome to every customer.
Inside, you’ll find more than just shelves of wine kits. Whether you’re new to winemaking or already have the hobby down, there’s something for everyone —from quick four-week kits to eight-week batches that can age for years. Each kit makes about 30 bottles and ranges from $79 to $199. Best of all, the $49.99 making fee is waived for first-time customers.
One of the most unique parts of the Smitty’s experience happens in the back of the store, where customers bottle their own wine. The process, from filling and corking bottles to applying personalized labels, shows that customers leave with more than wine; they leave with a story to share.
Recently, the space has been refreshed with walls painted by Darren White, giving it a bright and welcoming look. The custom labels have also become a hit, not only for weddings but for any occasion, from cottage weekends with friends to marking special milestones.
Greg’s vision is simple: keep the quality and friendly service people have always loved, while introducing new ideas to inspire the community to try something different. And with monthly specials shared on Facebook and in the newsletter, there’s always a reason to stop by and see what’s new.
