Call for Citizen Appointments to Committees of Council

The Town of Amherst is looking for interested citizens to fill appointments on the following Committees:
- Accessibility Advisory Committee: Assists Council in fulfilling its responsibilities relating to identifying, preventing and eliminating barriers to people with disabilities in municipal programs, services, initiatives and facilities.
- Poverty Reduction Advisory Committee: Assists Council with matters regarding poverty reduction, including increasing wellness and quality of life for all constituents living in the Town of Amherst focusing on what is needed to prevent people from experiencing poverty.
- Amherst Board of Police Commissioners: Acts as a liaison between the Amherst Police Department and Amherst Town Council.
- North Tyndal Wellfield Advisory Committee: Advises Council on policy issues to do with the protection of the groundwater quality.
- Planning Advisory Committee: Advises Council with respect to land use planning matters, and also acts as the Dangerous and Unsightly Committee and Heritage Advisory Committee.

The Devils Halo Cheesecakes and Milkshakes Grows in Amherst

When Melanie Cyr was growing up in Memramcook, NB, she often travelled with her mother to Amherst so they could take care of shopping for the family.
“My mom lives in Irishtown now,” Melanie said. “She still comes to Amherst to shop, and she’s always happy when she comes home. Because of her, when I had my kids, we always came here, and now my kids know their way around Amherst.”
A few years ago, Melanie’s daughter Danica was in university and wanted to start a small side business to generate some income. She started out creating cupcakes, but it wasn’t quite the right fit. Melanie explained that it’s long been their family tradition to bring cheesecake whenever they’re invited to a holiday supper or special event. So, after a lot of experimentation and combining several recipes, she and Danica developed a new product: cheesecake on a stick.

At Monday night’s regular meeting of Council, members approved a number of recommendations in preparation for the upcoming municipal election, including fully electronic voting to be delivered by Intelivote Systems Inc. As was conducted in 2020 and for a special election in 2023, Amherst will not use paper ballots when citizens select their candidates for Mayor and Council this fall.
Town of Amherst Signs Memorandum of Understanding for New Subdivision

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Town of Amherst and residential developers Tony Aalders and Holly Casey of Momentum Property Developments, for the construction of a new housing subdivision located along and adjacent to Russell Street in the town.
The new subdivision will be developed in four phases, with each phase containing between eight and fifteen dwellings.
