During a special ceremony on the evening of October 30, Amherst’s Mayor and Councillors swore their oaths of office and accepted the code of conduct, thereby officially taking the seats of their elected positions.
Amherst's Mayor Robert Small (left) was joined on stage by Councillors Charlie Chambers, Hal Davidson, Nic Furlong, Terry McManaman, Dwayne Ripley, and Kathy Wells – having each just sworn the oath of office at a special event on October 30, 2024.
“In accordance with Section 129 (1) of the Municipal Elections Act, for a four-year term in office, I declare the following elected, having received the largest number of votes cast: for the office of Mayor, Rob Small,” announced Kimberlee Jones, Town of Amherst’s Returning Officer. “For the Council of six positions: Charlie Chambers, Hal Davidson, Nic Furlong, Terry McManaman, Dwayne Ripley, and Kathy Wells.”
Outgoing Mayor David Kogon thanked his former Councillors, and welcomed the newly elected and re-elected members into their roles. “I worked with some terrific Councillors during my eight years in the Mayor’s chair, and I really need to thank them for the work they did… we can all be very proud of where we’ve brought the town of Amherst over the last eight years.”
Upon the completion of the swearing of oaths and acceptance of the code of conduct, members of Amherst’s new Council were given the opportunity to share remarks.
“The first thing I would like to do is thank all the voters who cast their vote,” said Mayor Robert Small. “I want to thank all of my family and friends for the support they gave me… I also want to congratulate each member of our new Council on their successful election results. In politics as in life, time goes fast and before you know it, four years has passed. So, we need to make sure we focus on the things that are important to our town, and our citizens.”
The newly elected Council will begin their training and orientation over the next few weeks, including sessions with provincial staff from the Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
