ROLE

The Parks, Maintenance and Stadium Operator shall be responsible for the supervision and operation of the Amherst Stadium and Town Parks while on duty. The Operator shall also be responsible for performing designated maintenance duties related to the operation and maintenance of all town owned recreation facilities. Under the direction of the Chief Engineer or designate, the Operator will maintain and monitor refrigeration equipment and complete appropriate plant log sheets for the ice making plant and equipment.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Safely operate and service ice conditioner (Zamboni);
  • Maintain appropriate communication and mutual cooperation with event security, customers and the general public;
  • Maintain close surveillance of the conduct of spectators, customers and report any discrepancies immediately;
  • Be familiar with and follow all Health and Safety procedures and be fully versed in defibrillator operation;
  • Maintain stringent building security during activity hours: restricted rooms and spaces are to be adhered to. When securing the building, check all dressing rooms and spaces to ensure that the building is indeed vacant. Ensure that the information board is correct and record any discrepancies to inform the next shift;
  • Perform outdoor maintenance duties at assigned facilities such as mowing, weeding, litter clean-up, planting of flowers and any other duties assigned by management;
  • Carry out custodial duties within town facilities, recreation facilities, park buildings, office spaces or assigned premises;
  • Perform routine checks, servicing, cleaning and basic maintenance of equipment being operated; Report the need for repairs, supplies, and tools to their immediate supervisor;
  • Develop and practice safe working habits and safety procedures while performing daily duties;
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possess a Stationary Engineer Class 2 Refrigeration Ticket, or be willing to obtain.
  • Must possess a valid WHIMS Certificate, or be willing to obtain.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate, or be willing to obtain.
  • Possession of a valid Nova Scotia class 5 driver’s license.
  • Physically able to perform the requirements of the job.
  • Knowledge and experience of the materials, practices, procedures, and equipment used for Stadium and Parks maintenance and operations.
  • Ability to understand and apply written and oral instruction.
  • Ability to work in a result orientated, customer focused, team environment.
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and professionally when dealing with the public.
  • Experience in carpentry, plumbing, painting and mechanical will be considered an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The Parks, Maintenance and Stadium Operator will work both indoors and outdoors in all weather and working conditions. This position may be required to work in confined spaces and at heights. This position may also be required to use or be exposed to chemicals, paints and other such hazardous materials. The Parks, Maintenance and Stadium Operator must be able to stand, walk, sit, kneel, lift heavy objects and operate various types of equipment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Permanent full-time (40 hours per week)
  • Salary - Per the current Collective Agreement - $30.47/hr. (effective April 1, 2025)
  • Satisfactory criminal records check, at the sole discretion of the CAO.
  • Satisfactory driver’s abstract, at the sole discretion of the CAO.
