Underpass Closure for Work at Subway

On Thursday, November 20, 2025, West Pleasant Street will be closed to through traffic between Albion Street and Park Street (a.k.a. The Subway).
This closure will complete repair work to street surface drains.
- The street will be closed by 7 a.m. on November 20
- Work will be completed and street re-opened by approximately 5 p.m. on November 20

International Restorative Justice Week, 2025

Beginning in 1996, Canada has recognized the third week of November as Restorative Justice Week.
The Government of Canada defines restorative justice as "... an approach to justice that focuses on addressing the harm caused by crime and meeting the needs of those involved."
Among other benefits, this week provides an opportunity to raise awareness of restorative justice, and its associated values and principles. This year's theme is "Celebrating progress. Shaping the future."
Mayor Rob Small has proclaimed November 16-23, 2025 as International Restorative Justice Week in the town of Amherst.

International Restorative Justice Week
November 16-23, 2025
WHEREAS in the face of crime or conflict, restorative justice offers a philosophy and approach that views these matters principally as harm done to people and relationships; and,
WHEREAS restorative justice is a non-adversarial, non-retributive approach to justice that emphasizes healing in victims, accountability of offenders, and the involvement of citizens in creating healthier, safer communities; and,
WHEREAS this year's theme for Restorative Justice Week is "Celebrating progress. Shaping the future", it is an opportunity to learn about restorative justice, educate and celebrate along with other communities across the country during the week.
BE IT RESOLVED, THEREFORE, that I, Robert Small, Mayor of Amherst, proclaim November 16-23, 2025 as International Restorative Justice Week in the town of Amherst.
Youth Arrested and Charged With Uttering Threats

A 16-year-old youth is facing 2 counts of uttering threats in relation to an investigation conducted by the Amherst Police Department.
The youth, who cannot be named as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act, allegedly made the threats that include harming several people including students at Amherst Regional High School.
As a result of the alleged threats, a search warrant was executed on November 14th 2025 at a residence in Cumberland County and the youth was later taken into custody and held for court.
Police are notifying the individuals who were subject of the alleged threats. Police do not believe there is any ongoing danger to students or staff at Amherst Regional High School or that there is anyone else involved in this incident.

Victoria Street Closed Sunday, November 16

On Sunday, November 16, 2025 - from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. - Victoria Street East will be closed to traffic between Havelock and Church Streets.
This closure will allow us to welcome and celebrate the tree for Boston as it passes through Amherst.
Join us from noon to 1 p.m. and have some fun while we send this year's Nova Scotia Christmas tree to Boston.

Election of New Deputy Mayor
The term for Amherst’s Deputy Mayor expires annually on October 31. At the regular meeting of Town Council, Charlie Chambers was elected as the new Deputy Mayor – effective from November 1, 2025 to October 31, 2026.
Council Committee Appointments
Council approved the following committee appointments effective November 1, 2025 to October 31, 2026, with the exception of the terms for the Amherst Board of Police Commissioners appointments as noted:
- Mayor Small has been re-appointed to Regional Emergency Management and re-appointed to the North Tyndal Wellfield Advisory Committee;
- Councillor Chambers has been re-appointed to the Planning Advisory Committee, and will continue to sit on the Amherst Board of Police Commissioners through October 31, 2027;
- Councillor Davidson has been re-appointed to the Accessibility, Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Committee, the L.A. Animal Shelter board, and will continue to sit on the Amherst Board of Police Commissioners through October 31, 2026;
- Councillor Furlong has been re-appointed to the Northern Region Solid Waste Committee, Regional Emergency Management, and will continue to sit on the Amherst Board of Police Commissioners through October 31, 2027;
- Councillor McManaman has been re-appointed to the Planning Advisory Committee, the North Tyndal Wellfield Advisory Committee, and the Cumberland Public Libraries Board;
- Councillor Ripley has been re-appointed to the Planning Advisory Committee, the Intermunicipal Tourism Committee, and has been appointed to the GFL Community Liaison Committee; and,
- Councillor Wells has been re-appointed to the Accessibility, Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Committee, as well as being newly appointed to the YMCA Board of Directors.
Further, all members of Council are also appointed to the Committee of the Whole of Amherst Town Council, and the Town of Amherst Audit Committee.
Additional Committee Appointments
The Town of Amherst Audit Committee received two new citizen appointments on Monday night when Jim Prince was appointed to the committee for a one-year term and Rae Burke was re-appointed for a two-year term.
Council also approved a motion appointing Ava Tooley as the Amherst Youth Town Council appointee to the Town of Amherst Accessibility, Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Committee.
Remembrance Day Ceremony

On Tuesday, November 11, 2025, the annual Remembrance Day Ceremony will take place in downtown Amherst at Victoria Square. Attendees are asked to be in place by 10:45 a.m.
To accommodate this year's ceremonies, Victoria Street East will be closed between Havelock and Lawrence, and Church Street will be closed at King. Streets will close at 7 a.m. and will re-open after the ceremonies, by approximately noon.
