Amherst Town Council Adopts Strategic Priorities for 2024
- Details
In support of our Mission to provide quality leadership, services, opportunities and resources for the benefit of our citizens, Amherst Town Council recently adopted a set of 2024 Strategic Priorities that will support the town’s growth and development in a fair, equitable and transparent manner.
“Town staff, our Mayor and Councillors meet every year and hold a strategic priority planning day, where we review the previous year’s areas of focus and determine the best way to move our organization forward,” said Jason MacDonald, CAO of the Town of Amherst. “We focus on developing four main priorities, but they don’t change annually just for the sake of changing; this year, we changed only one because, although we’ve made great progress across the board, our work in three of our categories is ongoing.”

Municipalities Launch Public Education Program for Recycling
- Details
Cumberland County’s three municipalities and their solid waste partners are launching a public education program to reduce the amount of contamination in recyclables going to the county’s solid waste facility at Little Forks for processing.
The Town of Amherst, Town of Oxford, the Municipality of Cumberland, Miller Waste and GFL Environmental are launching the campaign that features solid waste messaging as well as radio spots on CFTA and CKDH encouraging people to take care when sorting recyclables.
When sorting recyclables, residents/businesses are required to put paper products in a separate bag from plastic containers. Materials that are not sorted properly cause operational issues and delays with processing.
Making Housing Happen in Amherst

The Situation
Amherst, Nova Scotia is a large, small town of just under 10,000 people, with about 170,000 more living within a 30-minute drive. We are a safe, walkable community, geographically located in the centre of the Maritimes, very close to the New Brunswick border, with easy access to major urban centres and amenities. We are the gateway to Nova Scotia, on the picturesque Tantramar Marshes. And in Amherst, we are facing a housing crisis.
This, of course, is the case from coast to coast in Canada; Amherst is not alone as it struggles to meet the present and future residential requirements of our citizens. At Town Hall, we have been hearing practically every day about people who cannot find a suitable place to live. We have also been hearing from employers who cannot hire much-needed employees because of the lack of housing in the area.
