Town of Amherst facilities closed over the Easter weekend

Town Hall, the Community Credit Union Business Innovation Centre are closed Friday, April 3 through Monday, April 6 - re-opening on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
The Amherst Stadium is closed Friday, open Saturday, then closed again Sunday and Monday.
Amherst Police and Fire services will operate as normal over the Easter weekend.
If emergency service is required of the public works garage, please call Amherst Police dispatch at 902-667-8600.

Notice of Publication - By-law to Amend the Commercial Development Support Program By-law P-9

Notice is hereby given that Amherst Town Council, at a regular meeting held March 23, 2026, approved second and final reading of a By-law to Amend the Commercial Development Support By-law P-9.
This by-law, originally adopted in September of 2017, allowed a commercial property owner who is undertaking a new construction or a significant expansion, to phase in the increased taxes as a result of the increased assessment of their property over a ten-year period. The by-law amendments now phase in the taxes for the new assessment over five years. In addition, amendments include capping the rebate paid to a maximum of $100,000 annually, updating the map in Schedule A – Land Use Zoning Map, as well as corrections to some minor grammatical errors.
These amendments will only impact new agreements from May 1, 2026, on; all current agreements will be honoured in their current form.

Public Participation Opportunity - 1 Albion Street

Development Agreement Application
The Town of Amherst invites you to attend a Public Participation Opportunity regarding an application for a Development Agreement on the property located at 1 Albion Street (PID 25009432) to permit the construction of a 24-unit and 12-unit Apartment Building.
A Public Participation Opportunity will be held on Monday, March 30th, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. in Town Hall Council Chambers, 98 East Victoria Street, Amherst, NS.
The purpose of the meeting is to provide an overview of the proposal followed by an opportunity for questions and comments. At a later date, a summary of the meeting will be provided to the Planning Advisory Committee who will consider a recommendation to Amherst Town Council.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Amherst Town Council, at a meeting held on November 24, 2025, adopted a new Municipal Planning Strategy & Land Use Bylaw which governs all aspects of land use and development within the Town.

Street Closure March 11, 2026

Work on West Pleasant Street at Albion and the subway was completed and West Pleasant Street is now open to traffic again.

Beginning at 10:30 a.m. today - Wednesday, March 11 - West Pleasant Street will be closed between Albion and the train tracks.
This street closure is required to complete a repair at the subway.
Traffic control will be in place and drivers are advised to plan an alternate route.
Businesses in the Hewson Complex can be accessed via the Hickman end of West Pleasant.
All work should be completed and streets re-opened by early this afternoon.

Air Horns No Longer Permitted Within the Amherst Stadium

Effective immediately, air horns are no longer permitted within the Amherst Stadium.
This allows us to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for all attendees. While we appreciate fan enthusiasm, the loud noise can be disruptive and risks hearing health.
Fans are encouraged to show support through applause, cheers, and less disruptive noise makers.
