AMHERST, Nova Scotia – On Monday night, Council approved the revised Poverty Reduction Advisory Committee Terms of Reference for the Town of Amherst, which will include a committee comprised of staff, Council, and community stakeholders who can best support the Town of Amherst action plan on poverty reduction.

The Situation
Amherst, Nova Scotia is a large, small town of just under 10,000 people, with about 170,000 more living within a 30-minute drive. We are a safe, walkable community, geographically located in the centre of the Maritimes, very close to the New Brunswick border, with easy access to major urban centres and amenities. We are the gateway to Nova Scotia, on the picturesque Tantramar Marshes. And in Amherst, we are facing a housing crisis.
This, of course, is the case from coast to coast in Canada; Amherst is not alone as it struggles to meet the present and future residential requirements of our citizens. At Town Hall, we have been hearing practically every day about people who cannot find a suitable place to live. We have also been hearing from employers who cannot hire much-needed employees because of the lack of housing in the area.

At the November 27th meeting of Council, the development agreement with BlackBay Real Estate Group was given second reading, allowing this construction project to move forward.
The agreement with BlackBay Real Estate Group for 105 South Albion Street allows for the construction of a residential community consisting of two five-unit townhouse buildings, and two apartment buildings with 48 and 128 units.
At the October 30th meeting of Council, first reading was given to the development agreement and Public Participation Opportunities for this were held on October 4th and November 23rd.

A new deputy mayor was elected on Monday night. In non-election years, Council is mandated to select a deputy mayor at its October council meeting, to hold office from November 1 of that year until October 31 of the following calendar year, with an election following each subsequent October for the duration of the Council term. During the meeting of council, mayor Kogon opened the floor to nominations resulting in one nominee: Dale Fawthrop. A motion was presented and unanimously passed, electing councillor Fawthrop as deputy mayor for a one-year term.
